FAQ

If you are considering a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier from Palacio Wheatens, we invite you to review the frequently asked questions below to help guide your decision.

Why is it important to purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder?

Choosing a puppy from a reputable breeder ensures you are supporting ethical, responsible, and preservation-focused breeding practices. Reputable breeders prioritize:

  • Health testing and genetic soundness

  • Stable temperaments and thoughtful early socialization

  • Adherence to the breed standard

  • Lifetime support for puppy owners

At Palacio SCWT, we breed with the goal of preserving the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier as it was intended—healthy, structurally sound, and true to type. Puppies are raised with intention, education, and care.

Why does breeder affiliation with the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America matter?

Affiliation with the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America (SCWTCA) is important because the parent club establishes ethical breeding guidelines, health recommendations, and the official breed standard.

Breeders affiliated with the SCWTCA:

  • Commit to following breed-specific health testing protocols prior to breeding

  • Agree to uphold the SCWTCA Code of Ethics

  • Actively work to preserve and improve the breed

  • Remain educated through continued learning and mentorship

Palacio SCWT is proud to be a breeder listed with the SCWTCA, demonstrating our commitment to responsible breeding and breed preservation.

What health testing is recommended for Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers?

Health testing is essential to protecting the future of the breed. In accordance with SCWTCA and AKC recommendations, breeding dogs are screened for conditions known to affect Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, including:

  • Protein-Losing Nephropathy (PLN) – a serious inherited kidney condition

    • DNA testing prior to breeding helps reduce the risk of producing affected offspring.

  • Protein-Losing Enteropathy (PLE) – a gastrointestinal disorder

    • While no DNA test exists, annual blood and urine screening allows for early detection and helps avoid breeding affected individuals.

  • Hip Dysplasia – evaluation of hip structure and joint health

    • Assessed through X-rays submitted for orthopedic review.

  • MO (Microphthalmia DNA Test) – genetic testing for a hereditary eye disorder

    • DNA testing prior to breeding helps prevent affected offspring.

  • Eyes (CERF or OFA Eye Examination) – screening for inherited and developmental eye conditions

    • Conducted by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist.

These evaluations allow breeders to make informed decisions and reduce the risk of inherited disease.

What do the titles before and after an AKC registered name mean?

Titles reflect a dog’s accomplishments in AKC Conformation and Performance events.

  • Titles before the name (such as CH, GCH, BISS) are earned in the conformation show ring and indicate that the dog has been evaluated by multiple AKC judges and found to meet the AKC breed standard for structure and temperament.

  • Titles after the name represent performance and companion achievements such as obedience, rally, agility, scent work, and other AKC-recognized sports. These titles demonstrate training, teamwork, and the dog’s ability to perform specific skills under AKC judges.

How are puppies raised at Palacio SCWT?

Our puppies are raised in-home using "Puppy Culture", a structured, week-by-week developmental program with a strong emphasis on:

  • Early neurological stimulation

  • Proper socialization

  • Confidence-building experiences

  • Age-appropriate exposure

Our goal is to produce puppies that are not only beautiful, but well-adjusted, confident, and prepared for lifelong companionship.

How does the puppy application and deposit process work?

All potential puppy owners must complete an application and participate in an interview process.

  • Deposits are collected only after applicants have met the puppies at approximately three weeks of age, at which time both breeder and applicant discuss whether the placement appears to be the right fit.

  • Deposits are non-refundable, as they represent a commitment to a specific litter.

  • Deposits are applied toward the total purchase price of the puppy.

Can a deposit ever be refunded?

Yes. While deposits are non-refundable from the buyer’s side, the breeder reserves the right to refund a deposit at any time if it is determined that the placement is not in the best interest of the puppy or the family.

Our priority is always ensuring the right match for both puppy and home.

How are puppies matched to homes?

Puppy placement is based on:

  • Temperament evaluations

  • Structure and development

  • Household lifestyle and experience

  • Breeder insight and guidance

Final placement decisions are made by the breeder to ensure each puppy is set up for success.

At what age do puppies go to their new homes?

Puppies are placed no earlier than 8–10 weeks of age, allowing appropriate time for development, socialization, and transition from their litter and mother.

Are puppies sold with limited or full AKC registration?

Companion puppies are placed with limited AKC registration, which is appropriate for puppies not intended for breeding. Full registration may be considered for approved show homes at the breeder’s discretion and under a separate agreement.

Do you require spay or neuter?

Yes. Companion puppies are placed with a spay/neuter agreement, with timing discussed based on the puppy’s development and veterinary guidance.

Do you place puppies in show or performance homes?

Yes. We encourage participation in AKC Conformation and companion sports, and we are happy to mentor and support owners interested in showing or competing with their dog.

Do you offer lifetime breeder support?

Yes. Puppies bred by Palacio SCWT come with lifetime breeder support. We remain available for guidance, education, and support throughout your dog’s life.

Do you ship puppies?

Palacio SCWT does not ship puppies cargo. In-person pickup is preferred. Flight nanny arrangements may be considered on a case-by-case basis at the buyer’s expense.

What happens if I can no longer keep my dog?

Any dog bred by Palacio SCWT must be returned to the breeder if the owner can no longer keep them. At no time should a Palacio-bred dog be surrendered to a shelter or rescue without breeder involvement.
